The Joshua Slocum Society International "backs the development of young boys and girls through our Junior Race Program"

Our first attempt to support Junior races met with great success in New Bedford, Mass. through the efforts of the Community Boating Club and members of the New Bedford Yacht Club.

The following letter went to all participants in 1999:

Dear Singlehanded Sailors,

The Joshua Slocum Society International regards this Youth Championship as one of its premier events of 1999.

Captain Joshua Slocum, in 1895 circumnavigated the world singlehandedly in a 37 foot split rig and accomplished this remarkable feat in three years returning to Fairhaven, Massachusetts in 1898.

Although you have taken a slightly shorter course around the marks, you have entered into the race with the same relative personal challenge. Good sportsmanship, planning, and racing hard are goals you have set in order to participate and complete this race. A job well done. We congratulate you!

Keeping the ideals and principles that Slocum sailed by in your minds as you continue to "sail" through life will assure you a winning finish.

Personal regards,

The Joshua Slocum Society Int'l
Ted Jones, Commodore

A second Slocum Junior Race was held in 10/1/2000 under the banner of the Orcas Island Junior Sailing Program (State of Washington). This event marked the 2nd Annual Farecki Cup race sponsored by the JSSI. Three races were completed featuring the Lasers and Flying Junior boats. The permanent trophy is being maintained by the Orcas Island Junior Sailing Club. A keeper trophy was awarded to the first place finisher.

The Society will continue to support the Junior racers through the world in the effort to better prepare our young people (16 years & under) for the challenges ahead.
